Andrew Thomas

Dr Andrew Thomas is Assistant Director of Music at Cranleigh. He graduated with a first class honours degree in composition, flute and musicology from City University London and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and subsequently completed a masters degree in composition at St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge with Jonathan Harvey and Ken Hesketh.

Dr Thomas completed his PhD in musical composition in 2014 at Birmingham Conservatoire under the supervision of Richard Causton, Joe Cutler and Edwin Roxburgh (with whom he also studied conducting). Dr Thomas is professionally active as an orchestral and chamber musician, a chamber and solo singer, as well as having a wealth of experience as a choral, operatic and orchestral conductor.

As a composer Dr Thomas’s works have been performed throughout Europe and commissioned by ensembles including the London Sinfonietta, London Chamber Orchestra, Sound and Music, New Dots and CHROMA. As well as his role at Cranleigh, Dr Thomas has extensive experience working in music education with instrumentalists and ensembles.
