We had a very special Upper School Assembly on Tuesday as we welcomed Rev’d Roy Woodhams, Rector of St Nicolas Church in Cranleigh, to CPS.

Earlier in the term, St Nicolas Church, in conjunction with the British Legion, ran a Poetry Competition for local schools.  Pupils were asked to write a poem to commemorate World War One.

After speaking to the Upper School during Assembly about the sacrifice that so many troops made in the war, Rev’d Roy invited Evie M, Form 6, to the stage.

She read her poem aloud to everyone, which was a stunning account of what it must have been like to have been in the trenches. Her reading was poised and eloquently delivered; it was a very moving moment.

Rev’d Roy then announced that Evie had won 1st prize in her age category (age 12-18) and awarded her a book token.  A copy of Evie’s poem can be seen here.  We hope you find it as impressive as we did.
