May and was a wonderfully varied celebration of music making at Cranleigh Prep School. The afternoon began with an exciting entrance from the Upper School Percussionists playing ‘Zombie Squirrels’ by Byars. Our Lower School Percussionists followed later in the programme and treated the audience to a fun rendition of The Lion King’s ‘Hakuna Matata’ with special guests: Mr Royall, Mr Waller and Mr Eaglestone on Trombone.

The string department was well represented with the String Orchestra performing the rousing ‘British Grenadiers’ followed by the Lower School Orchestra with ‘Celtic Dream’ and ‘Sweet Molly Malone’ accompanied by the Lower School Choir. Our more experienced musicians played in smaller ensembles including the Recorder Group, Wind Quartet and the Brass Group. The wind players were also flourishing with the Training Band playing a fun version of ‘Greased Lightning’ and the Concert Band performing the challenging title music to the film ‘The Incredibles’.

The Form 6 Band is always a highlight of the concert and a popular number with the audience. This year Maisie R, Lily H, Sam S and Charlie P performed an exceptional cover of ‘Demons’ by Imagine Dragons. The most pleasing aspect of this group is the amount of independent work put in by the pupils to achieve such a polished performance.

Choral music at school continues to shine. The Chapel Choir sang a moving rendition of ‘Run’ by Snow Patrol, and the Lower School Choir were a real highlight, particularly with their energetic song ‘The Power in Me’. The Chamber Choir ended the concert with their slick and professional performance of ‘Cabaret’ and ‘We Are the Young’.

The whole afternoon had a happy and relaxed feel and Mrs Williams would like to thank all of the performers for their hard work in preparing for such a lovely concert.
