Having won the South Regional IAPS Hockey Championships, our U13 boys’ team went into the Surrey Championships full of confidence. However, they knew only a semi-final place would be enough to progress through to the regional stage of the competition.
After a slow start with a comfortable 1–0 victory over Hoe Bridge in their first game of the group stage, the CPS team went on to secure 3–0, 4–0, 4–0 and 1–0 wins against Lingfield Notre Dame, RGS Guildford B Team, St. Andrew’s and Reed’s respectively. As a result, they finished top of their group and were faced with a tough semi-final game against St. George’s. Knowing they had to win this to qualify for the regional competition two days later, the pressure was on. However, they weren’t fazed and they continued to play wonderful team hockey, winning 4–0 winners and gaining a place in the regionals. The final turned out to be a rematch against Reed’s who beat Parkside in the other semi-final. The game was once again a tight and tough encounter, with both teams playing some fantastic hockey. With a 0–0 score, the result had to be decided by penalty flicks. Unfortunately, this did not go in our favour, but we move onto Thursday’s regional competition full of confidence.
The team played seven matches, won six and lost one. They scored a total of 13 goals and didn’t concede any in game play throughout the tournament. Once again, it truly was a team effort and everyone involved played their part.
Well done to all!
