The Lent Term was packed full of music, with concerts and competitions, but the pupils at CPS still managed to squeeze in the much-loved House Singing Competition! This year’s theme celebrated the 50th Anniversary of ABBA winning the Eurovision Song Contest with ‘Waterloo’. As such, the unison song performed by each of the houses was ‘Waterloo’.

Hearts were the first to perform with an energetic rendition of ‘Waterloo’ followed by a hugely entertaining version of ‘S.O.S’. This included beautiful solos from Molly S, Lily B, Olivia S and Harvey P-N. The performance was full of Eurovision energy and the children were clearly enjoying themselves. Clubs then took to the stage and gave a great performance of ‘Waterloo’ before treating the audience to ‘Money, Money, Money’. The latter was complete with well-prepared choreography and finished off with a money gun executed by Ollie R!

Spades were next to perform and after the unison song they sang the ABBA favourite ‘Super Trouper’. This was full of rich harmonies and interesting textures and was a joy to listen to. Soloists included: Eleanor P, Maddie C, Aoife S and Chloe G. We are so lucky at CPS to have so many talented members of staff and Spades were expertly directed by Mrs Staples, our Head of Admissions! Diamonds were last to perform and their rendition of ‘Waterloo’ was excellent. Their choice of part-song was ‘Take A Chance On Me’ and it certainly got feet tapping in the audience. Well done to Hattie B and Tommy U for beautiful solos. Thanks also to Mrs Unwin for brilliantly directing the performance.

Our external adjudicator was Dr Andrew Thomas, Assistant Director of Music at Cranleigh School. He had the unenviable task of choosing a winner in both the unison and part-song sections. During the adjudication the Girls’ Chamber Choir entertained the audience with a stunning rendition of ‘Slipping Through My Fingers’ from ABBA’s famous musical ‘Mamma Mia’. Thanks to the Chamber Choir, directed by Mrs Williams, for adding an extra highlight to the afternoon. The overall results were as follows:

Unison Song
Winners : Spades

Own Choice Song
Winners : Diamonds

Many thanks to Dr Ward and Mrs Williams for directing rehearsals, and to Mr Saxel, Mr Robinson and Mr Owen who made up the band to accompany the Houses. This was certainly a fun afternoon of music making and a perfect way to end the term!
