In September 2021 an extensive refurbishment of the boarding house was completed to provide a safe, bright, airy and inviting environment.
The boarding house now covers two floors of the main school building, with one floor dedicated to girls’ accommodation and one floor to boys’. The surroundings are clean and modern, but also cosy, with pinboards next to the beds for children to decorate, which helps to make their personal area a home from home.
Each floor has its own common room with smart TV and selection of board games and books. There is also a shared common room called ‘The Hub’, which is situated on the ground floor. This has a pool table, air hockey and table tennis tables, as well as a kitchen area where children can prepare toast in the evenings.
Mr Batchelor (Head of Boarding) and his wife Lisa Batchelor (Housemistress) live to one side of the boarding accommodation, with Miss Eleanor Jolly (Deputy Housemistress) living on the other side. This helps to ensure that the boarders have the very best possible pastoral care at all times.
Mrs Lisa Batchelor was appointed Housemistress for girls’ boarding in April 2010. She runs School House alongside her husband, Mr Toby Batchelor, who is Head of History and Master of Scholars. Mrs Batchelor is also a qualified Chartered Physiotherapist and outside the house shares her time between her physiotherapy work and her family.
Mr Toby Batchelor joined Cranleigh Preparatory School in 2005 and has been Head of History since 2008. His passion for History developed as a direct result of the wonderful teaching he received as a young prep school boy. His own teachers were magnificent story tellers that really brought the subject to life and he endeavours to try to emulate these key influences of his own childhood.
