The Lent Term was packed full of music, with concerts, competitions and musical theatre shows, but the pupils at CPS still managed to squeeze in the much-loved House Singing Competition! This year’s theme was ‘Friendship and Music Around the World’. The unison song was ‘Sing’ by Gary Barlow which was written for the Commonwealth Band and Military Wives Choir in 2012.

Spades were the first to perform, bringing a Eurovision feel to the event, with their rendition of ‘Love Shine A Light’ by Katrina and the Waves. The performance was full of energy and the children were clearly enjoying themselves. Clubs then took to the stage and gave a lovely performance of ‘Sing’ before treating the audience to ‘Rocking All Over the World’ by Status Quo. This was a well prepared and vibrant performance.

Diamonds were next to perform and after the unison song they chose the popular song ‘Africa’ by Toto. This was full of rich harmonies and interesting textures and was a joy to listen to. Hearts were last to perform and their rendition of ‘Sing’ was excellent. Their choice of part-song was ‘Count On Me’ by Bruno Mars and it certainly got the feet tapping in the audience. Well done to Alfie B for a beautiful solo.

Our external adjudicator was Dr Andrew Thomas, Head of Vocal Studies at Cranleigh School. He had the unenviable task of choosing a winner in both the unison and own choice sections. During the adjudication the Chamber Choir entertained the audience with a stunning rendition of ‘I Am A Small Part of The World’ by Jay Althouse.

Thanks to the Chamber Choir, directed by Mrs Beddison, for adding an extra highlight to the afternoon. The overall results were as follows:

Unison Song

Winners : Clubs

Own Choice Song

Winners : Diamonds

Many thanks to the house staff and members of the Cranleigh Music team for all of their help in preparing the children for this fun afternoon of music making!
