The Gothia World Youth Cup 2022 finally went ahead after being cancelled twice due to Covid. It was hosted in the city of Gothenburg, Sweden, and included players from 90 countries, with an opening ceremony which included 50,000 spectators and players. The Gothia World Youth Cup is the biggest football tournament in the world where talented players from all over the world represent their region and enjoy an experience of a lifetime. There were several Prep School teams from England, with some making it through to the knockout stages and some making it through to the Plate.

Archie B., Archie F., Ben G., Cameron R.,, Gil B., Hugo T., Isaac B., Jack W., Matilda F., Oliver C., Oliver R., Raffy P. and Tommy W. were nominated by our Head of Football, Mr Stone, in recognition of their performance in School football. They were then selected for their respective Prep School’s Lions teams following trials involving 1,000 children. Archie B. and Matilda F. were selected for their A teams.

Matilda F. shone as her Girls Under 11 team were undefeated with six wins and two draws playing teams from Sweden and Peru. To top it off she was the leading goal scorer in her team which is significantly impressive as she plays in defence.

The Cranleigh community came together as families travelled to Sweden to support their young players, including their siblings from Cranleigh School.

The tournament was an experience of a lifetime for our pupils, playing against teams from Germany, Mexico, Sweden and Peru to name a few. A huge well done to all involved.
