The House Singing Competition 2022 took place at the end of term and it was a thoroughly enjoyable event for both pupils and audience members.

The excitement was palpable as the school was able to sing together after such a long time. Tasked with performing songs which were uplifting and life-affirming, each house rose to the occasion and every song choice was well received by all. The unison song was ABBA’s ‘Thank You For The Music’ and all four houses performed it with gusto!

Hearts were the first to perform and they started the event off well. After a very polished rendition of the unison song they sang Shakira’s ‘Try Everything’ from the film ‘Zootropolis’ which included some beautiful harmonies and entertaining actions. Spades took to the stage next and gave a lovely rendition of ‘Thank You For The Music’ before they treated the audience to Jess Glynn’s ‘I’ll Be There’. The performance was well prepared and had that special ‘goose-bump’ effect for the audience.

Diamonds were next to perform and sang the unison song with enthusiasm, capturing its optimistic vibe. Their choice of part-song was ‘Can’t Stop The Feeling’ from the film ‘Trolls’. This was a hugely enjoyable and energetic performance right from the start with some fun actions and excellent solo and small group work. The final house to perform was Clubs and they gave another lovely rendition of the ABBA song before treating the audience to ‘High Hopes’ by Panic! At The Disco. This was an ambition arrangement with several solo and small groups involved, but they performed it very well indeed; it was hard to find an audience member who wasn’t tapping their feet!

Our external adjudicator was Dr Andrew Thomas, Head of Vocal Studies at Cranleigh School. He had the unenviable task of choosing a winner in both the unison and own choice sections. During the adjudication the Chamber Choir entertained the audience with a stunning rendition of ‘Adiemus’ by  Karl Jenkins. Thanks to the Chamber Choir, directed by Mrs Beddison, for adding an extra highlight to the afternoon. The overall results were as follows:

Unison Song

Winners : Hearts

Own Choice Song

Winners : Diamonds

Many thanks to the house staff and members of the Cranleigh Music team for all of their help in preparing the children for this fun afternoon of music making!
