Form 6 were given a lecture by Albert Wood of Sensational Science on ‘Making Sparks Fly’. The hour long  presentation was spectacular and pupils were given an electrifying tour through electrostatics, electric arcs and experiments in a microwave.

Mr Woods boiled glass to make it a conductor, electrocuted a sausage and a gherkin. We were thankful the fire alarm didn’t go off!

He also showed a demonstration of setting fire to iron wool and making a fire ball using microwaves, but he did tell us NOT to try this at home! The finale included his ‘light saber’ where Mr Wood used a static ball to light a fluorescent tube.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed watching such a variety of exciting experiments – a very big thank you to Mr Preece for organising such a stimulating workshop.
