Xavier, currently in Form 5 and representing the U15 England team, spent the last week of the Easter holidays playing chess in Frydek Mistek in Czech Republic.

With a total of 20 members in their national squad, the England team entered competitors into both the U12 and U15 sections of a very well established event, known as the ‘Turnaj sachovych nadeji’.

This is a major junior competition in Eastern Europe, and this year competitors from the national teams of nine countries took part.

Due to his October Birthday Xavier, whilst only 12, had to play in the U15s category.  Considering he was the youngest competitor, he achieved a very respectable 2.5/8 over the six days of chess.

Headmaster, Michael Wilson, says “It’s a significant achievement to finish with a couple of excellent wins playing international competitors who were much older than him.”

Xavier has had a fantastic experience, with the event being shown on the Czech Republic TV news!  In addition to playing chess on an international scale, he was able to benefit from some wonderful cultural events that the organisers laid on, including a tour of a blast furnace museum, a variety show and a visit to a war memorial.
