After a very early start and a two and a half hour journey, Cranleigh Prep School arrived at Bryanston School in Dorset for the U13 Boys South IAPS Tournament 2017. As defending champions, the squad seemed focused on the tough day that lay ahead.

Cranleigh Prep walked onto the hockey pitch for their first group game against familiar faces in Eagle House. After a scrappy start by both teams, the game opened up and Cranleigh ran out comfortable 3 – 0 winners. The team managed to secure four more wins (without conceding a goal) in the group stages; 5–0, 5–0, 1–0 and 2–0 against Port Regis, Clayesmore, West Hill Park and Durlston Court respectively.

This meant they finished top of their group and sent them straight into the Quarter finals. Knowing that if the team won the Quarter final they would qualify for the National Championships at Millfield at the end of March, there were new pressures for the team.

However, this didn’t seem to faze them. In fact, they managed to improve on their wonderful team hockey against Sandroyd in the Quarter final. Scoring some fantastic goals in the process, Cranleigh Prep progressed into the Semi-final with a 10–0 win and set up a tough encounter with Hazlegrove.

Cranleigh started the brighter of the two teams and took an early lead in the Semi-final. However, Hazlegrove fought back and scored two goals at the end of the second half. Cranleigh responded well and equalised midway through the second half. The game continued to be even throughout until Hazlegrove won a short corner and expertly fired the ball into the bottom corner. Cranleigh kept fighting and pushed forward; in doing so, they left themselves exposed and conceded a late goal from another short corner; 2 – 4 final score.

Cranleigh picked themselves up and met St Hugh’s in the 3rd/4th playoff where they comfortably won 4 – 1. A brilliant end to a long, but very successful day in Dorset.

Having played 8 games, scoring 32 goals, only conceding 3 goals throughout the tournament and only losing one game all day (to the eventual winners). It truly was a team effort and every single player played their part in such an amazing day.

Bring on the nationals!
