Lower School children experienced the dazzling sounds of a full symphony orchestra this week, sharing the concert with 300 children from our local primary schools, in a spectacular ‘Magic of the Movies’ programme. The afternoon treat was introduced by Catherine Beddison, Head of Music at Cranleigh Prep School. Catherine (who entered to the 20th Century Fox fanfare in foxy shades with microphone) introduced the young pupils to the sections of the orchestra and involved them in the performance with questions about the films and the music. Two large screens showed stills from the films but the eyes of the youngsters, as well as the ears, were mainly focused on the huge orchestra. Featuring well known film scores from James Bond, Star Wars and ET to Harry Potter and Frozen, the Merriman Concert Orchestra performed with zest and energy, delighting the young audience. There were strong and positive reactions to hearing these pieces played live, with many children experiencing this sound world for the very first time. There was something that everyone knew and there was a lively engagement and excitement in the atmosphere that was thrilling for all who were involved.

Some Form 1 children passed on their thoughts to conductor Marcus Pashley:
