- Absence
If your child is ill, please telephone Mr Mike Howard, the day pupil Master, on 077205 93388 from 7.00 a.m. or Mrs Ginny North, in the school office, on 01483 542058 from 8.00 a.m.
- Arrival Time
Registration is at 8.05 a.m. in the classroom, so it is best to arrive by 8.00 a.m. Drop off point is at the top of the drive, just before the tennis courts.
- Arriving Late
If you arrive after registration for any reason, report to Mrs North in the Front Hall.
- Boarding
Boys with Mr Forster in Old House.
Girls with Miss Quinn in School House.
A varied programme of activities is offered during the evenings and week-ends.
- Breaktimes
There are two breaks during the day. Short Break is from 10.25 to 10.45 am, except on Wednesdays and Saturdays when it is from 10.15 to 10 35 am. Long Break is from 4.00 to 4.30 pm. During the morning and afternoon breaks, drinks and biscuits are available in the dining room.
- Calendar
A great deal of information will be found on the termly calendar, issued in the first week of term: sport, music, visits, parents’ evenings, plays etc.
- Cards
Cards are usually sent out 2-3 times per half term. House points are awarded for Effort on a scale of 1-5 and Achievement is graded from A-E. In addition, Plus Ones are awarded for work of a high standard. Please refer to the Calendar for the dates of the Assessment Cards.
- Chapel
Very much part of our daily routine.
Each Year group has one Chapel service during the school year led by pupils on a Saturday morning. Singing is led by the Chapel Choir and parents are welcome to attend.
- Common Room
The collective term used for the teaching staff of the school, not just the room they reside in.
- Congo
Congregational hymn practice on Saturday morning.

- Exeats
Exeats usually occur once a fortnight and start at normal going home time on Friday. Please refer to the Calendar for the dates.
- Extra curricular activities
Ballet, Modern Dance, LAMDA, Judo, Orchestras, Choirs and Chess. Details will be given at the start of the school year.
- Form tutors
First point of contact for any information parents wish to pass on to us, or any concerns you may have.
- G.K.
A General Knowledge test of 100 questions is given to all pupils at the end of each term. The Michaelmas and Lent questions are re-tested at the start of the following term. Help from home in finding out answers is actively encouraged!
- Gap students
Gap students, usually from overseas, spend a year with us. They help with sports and boarders’ activities. Two boys live in Old House, two girls live in School House.

Collection point is at the top of the drive near the tennis courts. Please do not arrive too early, as parking is a problem. Pupils are not allowed to wait outside on their own and will be taken to the Leisure Area if you are delayed. If a pupil stays on for an evening activity, he or she must be collected from the Leisure Area.
- Hair
Girls’ hair must be tied back if it is shoulder length.
Navy blue scrunchies or hair bands must be worn. In summer Lower School girls may also wear scrunchies which match their dresses (available from the school shop).
Boys must have a tidy conventional hairstyle. Hair wax or gel is not permitted and hair must be of a natural colour.
We will request hair cuts if necessary.
- Health
If your child is unwell please do not send him or her to school. Any medicines must be handed into Matron with written details of required dosage and times. Pupils are not permitted to keep any form of medication in their possession.
- Holidays
Please take note of our holiday dates: we try to keep them in line with Cranleigh Senior School – but with exam dates and differing curricular demands, this is not always possible. We do ask you not to organise time away from school during term time: the effect such absences can have on your child’s education is not to be underestimated.
- Horseriding
An optional extra which takes place at Cranleigh School during a games session. Contact Mrs Jolly if you are interested.
- Houses
There are four houses: Diamonds, Hearts, Clubs and Spades. Every pupil is allocated to a house. There are many house events and a house competition runs each term to which everyone contributes with his or her effort points (see Cards).
- Informal concerts
These take place on Saturday mornings after Chapel. Performers are all volunteers and pupils are encouraged to participate, whatever their standard.
- Internet
Pupils may use the internet under supervision for research or study. There is a strict internet code which pupils and parents must agree and adhere to. All pupils have their own personal e-mail addresses.
- Jewellery
No jewellery is allowed in school. Girls with pierced ears may wear stud earrings only and may not have more than one piercing in each ear. Inexpensive watches may be worn, but must be named.
- Kit
Everything, including shoes and sports kit must be clearly named and/or numbered. As names do wear off, please check frequently! Nametapes on outside of games kit (see instructions from school shop)
- Leaving school early
If you have to take your child out of school for any reason, e.g. doctor’s appointment, dentist appointment, visit to Senior School, please check out with Matron, having written to the Form Tutor in advance.
- Library
Every pupil is encouraged to borrow books or tapes from the Library. The Library is open every break time, before school and in the evenings. A record is kept of the books read by each pupil.
- Lunch
We operate a self-service system with members of Common Room supervising the lunch tables. There is a choice of main courses and desserts and salad is always on offer. We insist upon good table manners.
- Matches
Team lists are posted on the games notice boards outside the dining room on Tuesdays and Fridays. Away teams will also be told what time they will return. Match days are Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. Parents are welcome to watch. Boys must have their blazers in school for match teas.
- Matrons
In the event of accident/sickness during the school day, the resident matron will supervise the pupils until parents/School Sanatorium can be contacted. Direct Line to Matron: 01483 542056. Parents will be asked to collect a pupil who has become sick during the course of the day.
- Medical Centre
Situated at the Senior School, the Medical Centre is staffed 24 hours a day by fully qualified nursing staff. Injured or sick pupils may be treated there.
- Musical instrument
Every child has the opportunity to learn to play an instrument, of which the choice is wide and varied. Please contact Dr. Chika Robertson, Director of Music, for more details.
- N.T.C./N.T.S.
Not to Change. If your child is unable to play games for a medical reason, please send a note or N.T.C. slip to Matron indicating now long he or she will be off games and reason why. Pupils are not allowed to decide for themselves whether they are NTC or not. NTS = Not to Swim.
- Outings
During the course of the academic year each year group will have at least one educational trip or event in school. This curriculum initiative is at no cost to parents. Lunches are always provided and further instructions will be given to you by the Form Tutors.
- Parents' evenings
An opportunity for parents to meet members of Common Room and discuss progress. These take place during the Michaelmas Term and Lent Terms. In the Lower School meetings are with the Form Tutor and in the Upper School with subject teachers. Please refer to the Calendar for dates.
- Plus Ones
These are awarded for very good work. They count towards each pupil’s effort score and add points to his/her house.
- Prep
In the Lower School any written prep is undertaken in school. Spellings, reading and French vocabulary are done at home. In the Upper School, Day pupils will have one Prep to do at home each evening. The second Prep is done during the school day, unless pupils are taking part in extra curricular activities.
- Privilege Time
Takes place on Friday afternoons. In the Lower School activities are form based. Upper School, pupils are able to select an activity from a wide choice. Pupils who have been poorly behaved lose minutes from Privilege Time (see sanctions).
- Questions
If you have any, please ask! Form Tutors are a good starting point.
- Reports
These are written at the end of every term for Form 6 and at the end of the Michaelmas and Summer terms for the rest of the school.
- Sanctions
Poor behaviour leads to a pupil losing minutes from Privilege Time. If he/she loses a large number of minutes in a week your child’s Form Tutor will contact you. More serious offences will involve loss of breaktimes in addition to Privilege Time. Pupils make a supervised phone call home to explain their actions.

Swimming – see below
- Swimming
Every child is taught to swim and lessons are arranged on a rotational basis. We follow the ASA award scheme and the school swimming team competes in galas, training every week.
- Telephone calls
Boarders are able to phone home in the evenings and at weekends. If day pupils need to phone home, in an emergency, they may do so from Mrs North’s office, but must have permission to do so from a member of Common Room. Please encourage your child to check the teams’ notice-boards to avoid last minute panics about matches. Mobile phones are NOT allowed.
- Television
May only be switched on with permission of member of Common Room.
- Trainers
Trainers must be worn in break and free times for playing on any grassed area, 5- a- side, tennis courts and any sport. They should be clearly named on the back of the heel.
- Uniform
As with Kit, everything should be named. All items of clothing need a loop with which to hang them up. See Uniform List for opening times of the School Shop.

- Work detention
These are held from 5.15 -6.00, usually on Friday afternoons. We will contact parents if a work detention is given.
- Year groups

- Zzz- and so to bed
Term- time is incredibly busy and many demands will be made on your child. Please ensure he or she has a good night’s sleep.
- Drama
As well as class lessons, we offer private group Speech and Drama tuition leading to awards through the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts. Please ask Mr Hitchen for further details if you are interested.
