Geography is taught at Cranleigh Preparatory School in the knowledge that it is a subject which is increasing in relevance to everyday life and is consequently very interesting to pupils of Preparatory School age. The variety of topics covered, the continual need to update topics and review them as the world changes, can only capture the imagination. At each level, the pupils are encouraged to think for themselves and solve problems using information (especially on maps, graphs and diagrams), displayed in textbooks, periodicals, DVDs, web based computer programmes and the atlas. Presentation and neatness are vital in this subject and are stressed at all levels.

The Scheme of Work is designed within the framework of the National Curriculum, with success at Scholarship and Common Entrance in mind. Core geographical skills are developed through the Lower School inquiry-led curriculum in Forms 1 and 2 and the Humanities course in Form 3. These foundation years form the platform for more structured study of the subject in Forms 5 and 6. In these more senior years pupils are stimulated with a wide variety of challenges including interpretation and production of maps and diagrams, interpretation of statistics and prose (comprehension), collecting information from secondary sources (DVD, internet, newspapers, etc.) and practical fieldwork undertaken both locally and abroad .
