On Monday 27th November CPS musicians delivered a wonderful Autumn Concert. The evening was devoted to our larger instrumental groups and choirs and with around 170 pupils involved it really was a spectacular concert. The audience was immediately transported to warmer climes with the Concert Choir’s rendition of ‘California Dreamin’’.  Singing is as strong as ever at CPS; the Lower School Choir sang a jolly version of ‘On That First Christmas Day’ and the Form 1 members of the choir enjoyed their first public performance. The simple joy and enthusiasm displayed by the Form 3 Choir was plain to hear with a fabulous two-part version of ‘Chariot’s Comin’’ directed by Dr Ward.

The woodwind and brass department didn’t disappoint and it was lovely to hear the progression from the Junior Band playing ‘Dust Down’ to the polished and energetic ‘Livin’ La Vida Loca’ by the Senior Band. Smaller chamber music groups included the newly established Flute Group playing a festive version of ‘Distant Sleighs’ and the Contemporary Band’s powerful rendition of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ by Nirvana. The guitar and percussion department is growing in size and the audience was treated to the Form 4 Guitarists playing the ’12-Bar Blues’ as well as the Senior Guitar Group’s ambitious and successful arrangement of the classic track ‘Hotel California’ complete with vocalists, Hetty W and Hattie B.

Our younger musicians gave a great account of themselves and many were performing on their instruments for the first time to a large audience. The Junior Percussionists gave a lively rendition of ‘West African Rhythms’ on Djembe drums and the Junior Orchestra performed ‘Mattachins’ by Warlock with energy and enthusiasm.

The progression throughout the years was evident and, as we reached the final numbers in the concert, we were treated to music by some of our most experiences musicians. Our Advanced Violinists, directed by Mr Weaver (Head of Strings) delivered a sophisticated and accomplished performance of the ‘Klezmer Dances’ by Jones.

The highlight of the concert for many was the final item. For the first time in over 20 years, the CPS Music Department produced a full Symphony Orchestra. After just one term of rehearsals the orchestra, directed by Mrs Williams (Head of CPS Music) gave a fabulous performance of the popular ‘Harry Potter Highlights’ from the original movie. It was wonderful to hear our musicians playing together in a large ensemble and we look forward to more from them in the coming years.

Well done to all involved on what was a vibrant, happy and successful evening of music making!
